Questions About Pain
The pain specialists at Commerce Pain Management will do everything in their power to diagnose your source of pain. They are highly trained in methods to determine the underlying cause of pain and treatments to help reduce your pain. They will conduct a comprehensive physical examination, review your medical records and analyze the description of your pain. They will review any x-rays, CT scans, MRIs, myelograms, EMGs or nerve conduction studies you have had and may recommend additional diagnostic studies. With the help of advanced diagnostic procedures, we can typically determine the cause of pain in at least 80% of patients.
Medication Management
Provides pain control and improves a patient’s quality of life. Medication may be used alone or in conjunction with non-invasive treatments.

- Pain medicines: Narcotic pain medicines are often used to treat acute pain or cancer pain. They are prescribed for chronic pain also in conjunction with other modalities of treatment or after other modalities have failed.
- Anti-inflammatory drugs: Over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen sodium are the most commonly used medications of this type. They not only reduce swelling and irritation but also can relieve pain. Prescription NSAIDs are also available.
- Anti-depressants: Originally used only to treat depression, studies have shown that these medications can alleviate pain in certain situations. Furthermore, they may have the added benefit of helping the patient to sleep at night.
- Anti-seizure medications: These medications may help relieve certain types of pain by reducing abnormal electrical discharges in damaged nerves.
- Other medications: You may be prescribed other types of medicine(s) that are more specific to the type of pain you are experiencing.
Injection Procedures
Help alleviate chronic and acute pain in the spine and joints. Injections may be used alone or in addition to medication management in the treatment of pain.

Understanding Pain
Pain is a unique experience. Although two people may suffer the same diagnosis, the type and extent of pain each feels may be vastly different. That’s one reason why the cause of pain can be difficult to diagnose and why effective treatment can be difficult to determine. Pain is actually a message sent along the nerves to your brain to let it know that something is hurting the body. The way in which your brain interprets this message as “pain” is unique to you and can be influenced by mental, emotional and behavioral factors.
Pain is usually a symptom resulting from an illness or injury, and it can significantly interfere with a person’s quality of life and ability to function. However, there are times when pain is no longer just a symptom of a condition but actually becomes the condition to be treated.
Types of Pain
- Intermittent pain is episodic. It may occur in waves or patterns.
- Persistent pain lasts 12 or more hours every day for more than three months.
- Breakthrough pain comes on quickly or “breaks through” the medicine you are taking to relieve your persistent pain. It can occur many times during the day.
- Pain flares are short-term increases in one’s usual level of pain. This pain suddenly erupts or emerges with or without an aggravating event or activity.
At Commerce Pain Management, we treat a wide range of conditions that can cause acute or chronic pain.
